Agility with Microservices Programming Workshop (AMP) – co-located with European Conference on Software Architecture 2025
At the Agility with Microservices Programming workshop co-located with ECSA 2025, Roberta Capuano delivered a keynote titled “Migration to Microservices: Challenges and Opportunities.”
In her talk, Capuano presented an overview of the evolution of software architectures—from monoliths to SOA and microservices—and examined why many organizations are now reconsidering monolithic solutions. Drawing on both academic research and industry practice, she highlighted the motivations for migrating to microservices, while also addressing the technical, organizational, and economic challenges such as performance, maintainability, and operational complexity.
She shared insights from a real-world case study, emphasizing that migration is not cost-free and requires careful planning and trade-off evaluation. The keynote also explored emerging opportunities in the AI era, including the use of large language models and intelligent agents to support different phases of migration—analysis, design, execution, and monitoring. Finally, Capuano discussed the sustainability dimension, focusing on the growing energy footprint of software and how research on “green microservices” can help meet future environmental and regulatory requirements.
The key message was that while microservices bring agility and scalability, success depends on strategic planning, the effective use of AI-driven tools, and the consideration of long-term sustainability.
