Mixed Reality @FrameLab: Amiternum Experience at the Centro Congressi “Luigi Zordan”

Federico Martusciello presented a mixed reality prototype during the Amiternum Experience, an event dedicated to the origins of L’Aquila and the seals of Pope Gregory IX.

The prototype demonstrated how a mixed reality headset can recognize the surrounding physical environment, overlay the detected geometry, and accurately anchor a 3D reconstruction of the cathedral at Campo Santa Maria di Amiternum, the site where the papal seals were discovered, to the real-world space.

Within the reconstructed environment, users were able to explore the cathedral, interact with the seals, pick them up, move them, and enlarge them to closely examine the archaeological findings in the very location where they were uncovered.

Over the course of two half-day sessions, approximately 300 participants experienced the prototype. The demonstration highlighted the potential of mixed reality to foster public engagement with cultural heritage by enabling immersive and interactive exploration of historical sites and artifacts. More broadly, it illustrated how immersive technologies can serve as powerful tools for storytelling, bringing the past closer to the public and creating meaningful connections between digital experiences and the physical world.
